Why Shanghai Is Personal For Me

My mother’s family is from Hangzhou and Shanghai. That is the simplest explanation for why this page exists.

I came back to Shanghai as a professional — as a China analyst for J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs, flying in from Hong Kong, where I lived and worked for seven years. So I know this city as a market and as a place of business, in Mandarin, from the inside.

But I also know it as family. My father still runs a rural scholarship in the province today, and we return regularly — all three of my children have helped out in the village so many times. We keep a small apartment in Shanghai. This is not a market I service from a distance; it is a place my family keeps going back to.

So when a Shanghai family asks whether I understand what they want for a child who is building a life in America, the answer is that I have been standing on both sides of that ocean for my entire adult life.

The people I work with in connection with Shanghai are returnees (海归) who studied in the United States and came back, expatriate executives posted to the city, founders and finance professionals in Pudong and Jing’an, and — very often — Shanghai families whose adult children are living and working in America. That last group is the one I’m most uniquely able to help, because my network is concentrated exactly where those children are.

Not all of my clients are Chinese. A number are people whose lives already cross cultures — expatriates, internationally mobile professionals, people who’ve built careers across the Pacific — and who want a partner who understands both worlds. That is the centre of this practice rather than an exception to it.

Returnees land between two worlds. You spent formative years in the United States and came home changed. The people who understand both halves of you are rare in either country, and the usual introductions don’t account for that at all.
