Seattle is family for me. I have more than a dozen cousins here, and I'm up visiting often enough to go crabbing with my aunties that it's become a second home. I know its neighborhoods, its enormous and thriving Asian-American community, and the particular texture of a city that's brilliant, a little introverted, and organized around a handful of very large employers. I love it here — and I love matching people here.

• The “Seattle Freeze” is real. This is a warm city that can be genuinely hard to break into socially — people are polite, private, and slow to open up. Organic introductions are rarer here than almost anywhere.

• It's a company town, in the best and hardest way. When your whole world is one campus, your dating pool is your org chart. The structural trap again — the people you know are the people you work with.

• Everyone's heads-down and a little introverted. Add long, dark winters and demanding build cycles, and it's easy for years to pass without your circle ever widening.
