Why San Diego Is Personal For Me

My sister and her family live in San Diego, so I’m here often — usually for my nieces, who are the real reason for most of my visits.

I grew up in Southern California, in Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes, so this part of the world has always been my map. But San Diego in particular I know as family: the regular trips down and waiting with excitement for the new terminals to be built - but also for my nieces - the birthdays, the ballet performances, school ice cream socials and the weekend rhythm of a city where my sister chose to build her life. That’s a different kind of knowing than passing through for a conference.

My San Diego clients are physicians and surgeons, biotech and pharma executives, researchers at UCSD, Scripps and Salk, naval officers and defense professionals, founders, and attorneys. Many came for a fellowship, a lab, or a company and ended up loving the climate and community. They’re accomplished, and often surprised to find that a city this pleasant has been this hard to meet someone in.

Not all of my clients are Asian. Some are people whose lives already cross cultures — who lived or worked abroad, whose careers are international, or whose families already are. What they share with everyone else on my list is that they’re serious, and that they want a partner rather than a type.

Why Dating Here Is Harder Than It Should Be

San Diego is a beautiful city that is socially small. The professional community here is tighter than its size suggests. Once you’ve been out in La Jolla or Del Mar for a few years, the same faces recirculate.

Medicine and research eat the calendar. Residency, fellowship, grant cycles, call schedules. The years that would ordinarily be spent building a personal life are spent building a career instead, and nobody warns you how quickly they pass.

The lifestyle can quietly substitute for a relationship. Surfing, hiking, the weather, a good group of friends. Life is genuinely pleasant, which makes it easy to defer the harder work of finding a partner for another year.

It’s a transient city. People arrive for a posting, a fellowship, a startup. Timing gets complicated, and a lot of promising connections end because one person’s next step is somewhere else.
