My Tie To Philadelphia

Philadelphia reaches me through the Ivy+ world. I’ve spoken at the Penn Club, and the alumni circles I’ve spent my life inside — Wellesley, the Seven Sisters, the Ivy+ networks that connect Bryn Mawr and Penn and everything around them — run straight through this city. As co-President of one of Wellesley’s largest alumnae organizations, those networks aren’t abstract to me. They’re how I’ve met a great many of the people I match.

I have ran matchmaking events and talks at the Penn Club. I’m a member of the Penn Club of New York. My sister-in-law lives in Philly and I love visiting her to see my darling niece.

I’m a third-generation Chinese matchmaker (紅娘) and a former Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan investment banker. I’ve been featured in Business Insider, NBC News Daily, and ABC News. My Philadelphia clients are physicians and surgeons at Penn, Jefferson and CHOP, researchers and faculty, attorneys at the Center City firms, pharmaceutical and biotech executives, and founders. Many are Penn, Wharton or Drexel alumni. A large share are first- or second-generation, deep into demanding training pipelines, and acutely aware that the years are passing while the work continues.

Not all of my clients are Asian. The academic and medical worlds here are international by nature, and a meaningful share of my Philadelphia clients are people whose lives already cross cultures and who want a partner who understands that.

Why Dating Here Is Harder Than It Should Be

Medical training consumes the years that would otherwise build a personal life. Residency, fellowship, attending. By the time the schedule loosens, the friends who would have introduced you to someone have all paired off and moved to the suburbs.

The academic world is small and self-contained. Your department, your lab, your hospital. Dating within it carries professional complications, and the alternative is starting from zero outside it.

Philadelphia keeps its circles close. This is a city of long-standing networks — people who went to school together, whose families know each other. Breaking into that as a professional transplant is genuinely hard.

Center City and the Main Line barely overlap. Two different social worlds, twenty miles apart, with less traffic between them than you’d expect. Where you live narrows who you meet more than it should.
