Why I Work In Miami

My route into Miami is the same one most of my clients took: New York finance.

I spent years at Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan, and over the past few years I have watched a remarkable number of people from that world pack up and move south. They arrived with their careers intact and their social lives left behind in Manhattan — which is a specific and surprisingly lonely position, and one I hear about constantly.

That’s what I understand about this city. Not its nightlife, which is well documented and not especially useful for finding a partner, but what actually happens to a person’s private life when they relocate somewhere they know everyone professionally and almost no one otherwise.

Through my earlier collaboration with the Family Office Exchange - we have met wonderful people in Miami and Coral Gables.

My Miami clients are finance professionals and fund managers — many relocated from New York in the last few years — real estate developers and investors, founders, attorneys, physicians, and family office executives. A large share arrived recently, know people professionally and almost no one socially, and have found that a city famous for its nightlife is surprisingly hard to meet a serious partner in.

Not all of my clients are Asian. In a city this international, a large share are people whose lives already cross cultures — and who want a partner who moves comfortably between them. Those matches take genuine cultural fluency, which is something I watch for closely.

Why Dating Here Is Harder Than It Should Be

Miami’s social scene is built for visibility, not intimacy. Dinners, clubs, events, boats. It is genuinely fun and almost entirely unsuited to meeting someone you’d build a life with.

Everyone is new here. The recent influx means most of your peers arrived within the last few years. Deep social roots are rare, and the friend-of-a-friend introductions that work in older cities barely exist yet.

The Asian-American professional community is small and dispersed. It’s here, but it is not concentrated the way it is in New York or the Bay Area. Meeting people who share your background largely doesn’t happen by accident.

Transience cuts both ways. People came quickly and some will leave the same way. Reading who is actually planting roots — and who is here for a tax year — matters more in Miami than in almost any other city I work in.
