Dating Asian Women: Guide from a Matchmaker

I didn’t become a matchmaker because it seemed like a fun career — well, okay, yes, it’s been amazing. It was only later that I realized there was history here. My mother used to organize “Gaze at the Moon” parties for my father’s graduate-school friends, back when they were all immigrants from Taiwan, living in New York and building new lives. Then I heard the stories about my grandmother quietly passing love letters for her cousins. Who knew? It turns out I’m a third-generation Chinese matchmaker — I just took a while to notice.

So many people — non-Asian and Asian alike — ask me the same thing: “What do Asian women like?”

My first instinct is always the simple, honest answer: the same things many women want. A good, trustworthy, responsible partner to have fun with and build a life together. So why would dating Asian women be any different?

And yet — there are some real distinctions, and a few key mistakes worth not making. So let’s talk about them honestly.

There’s No Such Thing as “the Asian Woman”

Here’s the first thing to get right: there is no such thing as “THE Asian woman.” We are not one big blend. There’s Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Vietnamese. There’s Asian-American, first-generation, third-generation. There are language differences, dialect differences, and differences in lifestyle depending on whether someone was born here or born there.

And yes, there are stereotypes — some of them deeply unhelpful.

Drop the Stereotypes First

The “submissive and obedient” stereotype — or its supposed opposite, the “dragon lady” — are both so limiting, so flattening of real, genuine people. If that’s what you’re expecting when you date an Asian woman, then I’m honestly not the right matchmaker for you. (There are others — just search online.)

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the thing that actually matters: culture.

Culture Is the Real Key

Culture matters a lot. There are some common themes worth understanding — not as rules, but as context. (I go much deeper on this in Asian vs. Western dating culture.)

Communication Styles

As a daughter of Taiwanese immigrants and a parent of three young adults, I’ve watched ways of communicating shift enormously across generations — and they’re still shifting. Some women you date may be more avoidant, or carry some reticence about being direct. And plenty of us who’ve chosen another way can be quite outspoken. For many of us, it’s an ongoing shift, and then a balancing act.

Family

Family generally matters a great deal to Asian women. Confucian ethics emphasize parents and respect — a sense of minding your elders and being courteous.

One of my earlier clients, a physician, spent so many weekends taking her godparents, uncles, and aunties out to lunch that she was completely neglecting her own dating life. We fixed that. She’s now happily married to a wonderful man who was equally devoted to his own parents — but who had also realized that prioritizing yourself matters too. Better late than never!

Achievement

Then there’s achievement — education, career, marriage, children, financial independence. Parents often instill this in their daughters and sons alike, and it can weigh heavily. There is real pressure there.

There’s also the emphasis on marriage and having children. Even now, our relatives will nag about whose kids aren’t dating yet or don’t have children. It’s treated as everyone’s business — even though, really, it’s not. That tension between achievement, family, and privacy is something a lot of us navigate quietly.

Humility

In my book, Ancient Wisdom Modern Love, I write about a chengyu — a Chinese idiom — for bragging: “sticking gold pieces on your face.” It’s basically throwing shade at showing off.

So if your date is being especially humble about her formidable accomplishments, understand that it’s often cultural. But don’t mistake that humility for a lack of pride. She may be quietly thrilled about that promotion, that piece of music she composed, that incredible dish she made. So keep on complimenting!

Drawing Boundaries

This next one is a Cassindy Chao opinion, so take it for what it’s worth — just an opinion. I think many Asian women aren’t great at drawing boundaries. It’s something a lot of us are working on, at different stages.

So here’s the advice: there can still be resentment when our boundaries get crossed — even when the surface says “it’s fine, you choose.” That’s not always the truth. Sometimes we’re still figuring out how to prioritize our own needs in a way that doesn’t feel selfish to us. It’s part of self-love — and it’s a theme many Asian women are actively working on.

Seeing the Person, Not the “Type”

If there’s one thing I’d want you to take from all of this, it’s that dating an Asian woman was never about decoding a “type.” It’s about seeing a specific person clearly — her family, her ambitions, the quiet pride behind her humility, the boundaries she may still be learning to voice — and meeting her there. That’s the whole art of what I do. If you’d like help finding someone with that kind of care, that’s exactly what we do at AWM Love.

Don't Compete on Spice Levels: Gastronomic Considerations with Asian Women

Exploring culinary adventures can be tricky, especially when it comes to spicy foods. If you're unfamiliar with this, your first encounter can be quite intense.

Trying to impress an Asian woman by showcasing your spice tolerance can actually backfire. The terms "back" and "fire" can be taken literally in this context.

It's advisable to approach spicy foods like Szechuan dishes with caution. No matter how much water you drink, the fiery sensation will linger on your tongue. Instead of being the "chili king," focus on enjoying a non-spicy meal and the company.

Be Yourself: Authenticity in Dating Asian Women

While showing interest in her culture is commendable, it's crucial not to fall into the trap of stereotypes. Authenticity always stands out. Instead of putting on an act, be yourself. Engage in genuine conversations that mirror your actual interests.

The foundation of any relationship should be mutual respect. Listening actively and sharing about your cultural nuances can be a great way to build understanding. Don't hide behind a facade; let your humor and personality be the beacon.
