Finding Your True Partner

There is a Chinese chengyu that I write about in my book Ancient Wisdom Modern Love. It’s 畫餅充飢 which translates as “drawing a pancake to satisfy your hunger”. As a child, if I was haunting the kitchen looking for a snack before dinner, my mother would tease me and tell me to “go draw a pancake” and shoo me into another room. These imagined pancakes never quelled my hunger and this chengyu reminds us that you cannot satisfy yourself with an illusion. If you want to be full and content, you need to solve the practical problem and make your own pancakes. [💡Understanding the Fine Line Between Infatuation and Love ]

Navigating the Risks of Fantasy in a Relationship

When it comes to dating, this means understanding the reality of the relationship you’re in. While avoiding issues and getting lost in comforting ideas may feel good in the short-term, it won’t provide lasting happiness in a relationship. It also makes it harder for us to understand what we truly want and how to find it.

Matchmaking: Balancing Reality & Finding Dreams

We once worked with a lovely client who had long pictured herself married to a doctor. Her fixation on this dream led her to overlook significant flaws in her unreliable doctor boyfriend of seven years. Encouraging her to assess tradeoffs, I stressed the importance of seeing the reality behind an idealized image that failed to meet her needs.  [💡Finding Your True Partner ]

Aligning Dreams with Reality to Find the Right Partner

Moving forward, aligning dreams with reality is pivotal. While envisioning an ideal partner is encouraged, it must be rooted in possibility and aligned with personal values. Seeking external perspectives from friends or family can offer valuable insights. [💡Expectations in a Relationship: Setting Healthy Boundaries ]

Self-reflection plays an important role in unpacking the origins of our expectations. Understanding your own values, interests, and life goals is the foundation for a healthy mindset when looking for a compatible partner. Reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and what you truly desire in a relationship. This self-awareness will guide you in seeking a partner who aligns with your core values and complements your lifestyle

Once you are clear on your own needs and wants it is crucial to follow through on them with patience and perseverance. Finding the right partner is a process that takes time. Avoid rushing into commitments and allow relationships to develop naturally so that you can stay mindful throughout your journey. Patience allows you to truly get to know someone and build a strong foundation for a lasting connection.. [ 💬 Quick Chat with Relationship Expert ]
